Throckmorton/Ft. Griffin

Welcome to Throckmorton!

That’s a saying your gonna hear a lot. This little town definitely  embraces the small town vibes. With a population of a little over 700, it is easy to pass through on your journey. You should definitely stop and rest awhile. This is a cowboy town. This is a town historically know for cattle and is dubbed “Capitol of Cow Country”. Nowadays it’s also known for another activity…Star gazing! They call it Dark Sky Country. There is access to 8 telescopes through Throckmorton CofC and Swenson Observatory. You can check them out here.

Authentic Accommodations

If you plan on staying the night, I recommend booking a reservation at the Lazy T Hotel.

Its’ affordable, comfortable and close to everything you need.

Food N’ Fun

Be sure to stop at Tia Oci’s Taco’s and grab some Tacos for lunch. Bring your cash as it is a cash only establishment. They have great food and a fun atmosphere located on N. Minter Ave near the courthouse. Check them out

Have Saddle Will Travel

If your looking for a fun place to shop, check out Mitchell Saddle Shop. They custom make saddles and sell everything from western art to toys for the littles. Everything in the store looked brand new and was a very clean environment.

Learnin’ And Stuff

Down the road is Ft. Griffin. This state archeological landmark should not be missed. It offers camping and even Equestrian camping. So bring your horses and enjoy the star gazing as this is also  Dark Sky Country. It has a great museum and a walking path to see the actual ruins. Some buildings are replicas. It has fantastic scenic views and is well maintained and run by the Texas Historical Commission. Check them out
